AbstractThe chapter focuses on the various forms of graphene, such as two-dimensional (2D) layered structures and their properties, and explores fundamentals and various sensing applications. It emphasizes the bandgap engineering of these materials when reduced to a few layer structures from bulk counterparts. The effect of synthesis routes and the development of such monolayers as components of sensing devices is also discussed. Furthermore this chapter discusses a generic overview of sensors and their performance-determining parameters along with the principles by which the operation of gas, humidity, and biosensing are differentiated. This chapter sheds light on the individual properties of 2D materials that have been developed as sensors and compares the performances. The main purpose of this chapter is to highlight the progress of applications of 2D materials in sensing devices and to show how they perform better when compared to their silicon and graphene counterparts, owing to better control and their remarkable electronic properties.
