In the hydrogenation of methyl pyruvate or acetophenone the fumed silica-based catalyst gives zero enantioselectivity, but under optimum conditions enantiomeric excesses of &amp;gt;90 and similar to40%, respectively, are obtained with the MCM-41-based catalyst.
